Attack on Google Highlights Cyber Security Issue

Posted on February 23rd, 2010

There may be one positive thing that came out of the recent cyberattack on Google (GOOG). That good thing would be a very timely spotlight on the issue of computer network security. When we consider the almost instantaneous carnage that one talented hacker or code writer could inflict upon almost any data system, the prudent investor might do well to investigate the opportunities presented by such a scenario.

In the case of the Google attack, investigators now believe they have pinpointed the code writer who created the programing that was responsible for the intrusion. There is no word yet regarding who may have initiated the actual attack.

While waiting for more news about the Google data breach, investors might do well to make a niche in their portfolios for a data protection play or two. Cyber security can only gain in importance as time goes on. Computer data systems are increasingly integrated in the very fabric of our lives. Whether that is good or not, it is none the less true.

The one company which I’ll mention in this context is Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC). I don’t mention CSC as an endorsement. I simply believe that it is one of the strongest players in its field. The company has a well situated global footprint, and with the recent appointment of Carlos C. Solari as vice president of Cyber Technology and Services, the company has some very broad networking opportunities in hand.

Gary Sattler does not knowingly hold positions in the companies he blogs about.
