Recent news hasn’t made it sound like getting a mortgage loan modification is simple. However, there are a few things homeowners can do to improve their chances.

If a consumer wants to ensure they are approved for a mortgage loan modification, they must complete all paperwork and submit everything mandated by the federal government and banking institutions, financial website Bankrate.com said. Paycheck stubs must be submitted, along with a budget and a letter of hardship. Missing any required documentation could easily stall the process.

Homeowners need to ask specific questions and be persistent, the financial website said. All misunderstandings can be cleared up by having a discussion of what specifically is required of them. Showing patience may also lead to the modification servicer paying more attention to a specific person’s situation.

Staying in touch with a representative of the modification program is also suggested. “Homeowners should call the servicer at least once a week and check on the status of his or her request,” Bankrate.com said. Counselors want to hear from homeowners on a regular basis.

A nationwide mortgage loan modification program was implemented in 2009. The federal government hopes to reach 4 million homeowners by 2012.
