According to The Wall Street Journal and efinancialcareers.com, the financial services industry is seeking IT professionals to fill its ranks. Although the average financial services company has been hard hit by the recession and hiring has slowed, the demand for IT professionals is up for the fourth month in a row. IT job postings on efinancialcareers.com were up 24% for the month of July. Analysts predict that this is a steady trend, indicating a strong interest in IT department growth for financial advisor services.
Why IT Jobs Are In-Demand for Consumer Financial Services
The growth of IT jobs can be tied to the overwhelming need for real-time analysis of large quantities of data within the financial services sector. IT professionals who can translate this data with speed and precision are in high demand by most major financial firms. These jobs are typically available in large cities that are home to many financial services firms, including New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Chicago. Programming skills in C+, C++, C#, Perl, Java, and J2EE will give IT professionals an edge over the competition. Database skills are in high demand as well, with knowledge of database administration, SQL, and Oracle topping the list.
Financial Investment Services and Risk Management
While IT professionals are generally in demand, those who have had prior experience with risk management should have no difficulty finding a job. In the post-recession financial environment, techies who have a background in using systems to assess risk in portfolios, trading, and credit are needed. Those who have experience in evaluating computer systems and security risks are in high demand as well. The field of risk management should, thanks to the recession, be growing for a long time to come.
