NHSC Scholarship Program
The NHSC scholarship program helps to pay for tuition, fees and other living expenses to students enrolled in accredited medical (MD or DO), nurse, dentist, certified nurse-midwife and physician assistance training.
Clinicians who have just completed training and seasoned professionals who are committed to serving underserved and underprivileged people in urban and rural areas where there is a shortage to access health care and health insurance will find fulfilling and rewarding careers through this NHSC loan repayment program.
How Does The Program Work?
The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) offers a loan repayment program of $50,000 or the outstanding qualifying student loan balance if it is less than $50,000. This program is tax free to dental and mental health and primary care medical clinicians in exchange for working at an approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area for two years. Clinicians, who have completed the two year service agreement, may be eligible to apply for additional support for extended service.
How Do I Qualify for the NHSC Program?
To be eligible for the NHSC loan repayment program you have to be a U.S. citizen or National and be trained and credentialed in an eligible care discipline as follow:
Allopathic (MD) or Osteopathic (DO) Physician Certified Nurse-Midwife Dental Hygienist Dentist Health Service Psychologist Licensed Clinical Social Worker Licensed Professional Counselor Marriage and Family Therapist Psychiatric Nurse Specialist Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Physician Assistant
What Are The Service Commitments?
A two year service commitment is required at an approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area. For repayment of loan you are also required to work a full-time shift; at least 40 hours each week with at least 32 of those hours in the ambulatory care setting. However for gynecologists/obstetricians, family practitioners and certified nurse-midwives who practice obstetrics often must commit to at least 21 hours per week with delivery and other hospital-based duties. Behavioral and mental health providers must work at least 21 hours of the 40 hours per week providing patient counseling in an ambulatory outpatient care setting.
Other NHSC Loan Repayment Benefits
If you are currently working at an approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area you can still apply for the NHSC loan repayment program.
A majority of the NHSC clinicians work at Federally-supported health centers. Clinicians who work at these centers are liable for medical malpractice liability protection through the Federal Tort Claims Act.
NHSC requires that employees are paid in accordance to a job with the Federal civil service position. Salaries can also be negotiated with the employing site.
