This is according to the Association of Investment Companies (AIC), which said 82% of parents believe university has stretched their finances.
Meanwhile, over half (55%) of the students polled revealed they were worried about not finding a job once they had graduated.
Ian Overgage, Acting Communications Director at the AIC, said: “Many young people go to university to enjoy some of the best years of their life but the reality on graduation is a huge financial burden which will take years to pay off.”
He also said it was worrying that so many people underestimate how much it will cost to undertake further education.
Santander research recently found that around half of university students in the UK take on a part-time job in order to fund their studies.
